Alma
Alma is a classic Southern fig developed by the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station (Texas A&M University) and officially released in 1974–1975. Bred from a cross between the female cultivar Allison (Vernino) and the Hamma caprifig, Alma was selected for its exceptional fruit quality, productivity, and resistance to the humid conditions of the American South. The small to medium, pyriform fruit ripens to a warm golden-brown with amber flesh and features one of its most distinctive traits—a naturally sealed eye with a drop of resin that helps prevent insect intrusion and fruit spoilage. Alma is highly productive, begins bearing at a young age, and has earned a reputation as one of the most reliable honey figs for warm, humid climates.
When fully tree-ripened, Alma offers an exceptionally rich honey profile with notes of caramel, brown sugar, and wildflower honey, supported by subtle hints of dried apricot, baked pear, and golden raisin. Its flesh is smooth, syrupy, and succulent with very little seed crunch, creating a luxurious texture that melts in the mouth. Unlike many simple sugar figs, Alma develops surprising depth and complexity as it reaches peak ripeness, making it equally enjoyable fresh, dried, or transformed into preserves. For growers seeking a dependable, productive tree with outstanding sweetness and excellent rain resistance, Alma remains one of the finest American-bred fig varieties ever introduced.
