Black Madeira Cutting
Often regarded as the benchmark by which all dark figs are judged, Black Madeira is a legendary Portuguese variety originating from the island of Madeira. The cultivar was introduced to the United States through the USDA's National Clonal Germplasm Repository at UC Davis, where it became known as Black Madeira (UCD). As collectors began growing and comparing hundreds of varieties, Black Madeira consistently rose to the top for its extraordinary flavor, earning a reputation as one of the finest figs in the world. Today, it remains the gold standard for berry-flavored figs and a cornerstone of serious fig collections.
Black Madeira produces small to medium fruit with an elegant, elongated shape, nearly black skin, and a dense, glistening crimson interior. At peak ripeness, the flesh becomes remarkably thick and syrupy, delivering an unforgettable combination of blackberry preserves, black cherry, raspberry reduction, cassis, dried fig, and red wine. Subtle notes of dark chocolate, balsamic richness, and molasses emerge as the fruit hangs longer on the tree, creating exceptional depth and complexity. The balance of intense sweetness with bright berry acidity gives Black Madeira a finish that is both rich and refreshing, making it one of the highest-rated tasting figs among collectors worldwide.
The tree is slow to establish, rewarding patience with increasingly heavy crops as it matures. Black Madeira is a late-season variety that performs best in warm climates or when provided with a long growing season. Full sun and consistent warmth are essential for developing its signature flavor, while growers in cooler regions often achieve excellent results by growing it in containers or protected locations. Once established, the tree is highly productive and capable of producing fruit of truly exceptional quality that few other varieties can rival.
