The cultivar was introduced to the United States through the USDA's National Clonal Germplasm Repository at UC Davis, where it became known as Black Madeira (UCD). As collectors began growing and comparing hundreds of varieties, Black Madeira consistently rose to the top for its extraordinary flavor, earning a reputation as one of the finest figs in the world. Today, it remains the gold standard for berry-flavored figs and a cornerstone of serious fig collections.

Black Madeira produces small to medium fruit with an elegant, elongated shape, nearly black skin, and a dense, glistening crimson interior. At peak ripeness, the flesh becomes remarkably thick and syrupy, delivering an unforgettable combination of blackberry preserves, black cherry, raspberry reduction, cassis, dried fig, and red wine. Subtle notes of dark chocolate, balsamic richness, and molasses emerge as the fruit hangs longer on the tree, creating exceptional depth and complexity.
