Black Mission
Black Mission is one of the most iconic and historically important fig varieties in California. Brought to the region by Spanish Franciscan missionaries in the 1700s, this classic fig has been treasured for generations for its exceptional flavor, productivity, and versatility as both a fresh and dried fruit.
The tree produces both a generous breba crop and a main crop of medium to large figs. The fruit ripens with deep purple-black skin surrounding a rich strawberry-red interior. When fully mature, the flesh becomes soft, sweet, and wonderfully flavorful, offering layers of classic fig sweetness, berry notes, and a rich honey-like finish.
Black Mission is a vigorous common (self-fertile) fig that does not require fig wasp pollination. Its reliable production, outstanding eating quality, and historic significance have made it one of the most widely recognized fig varieties in the world.
