Chios Dark

Chios Dark is a prized Greek heirloom fig believed to have originated on the island of Chios in the northeastern Aegean Sea. The variety was brought to the United States by a Greek family who preserved it for many years before it began circulating among collectors. Although still relatively uncommon, it has earned a strong reputation for combining exceptional flavor with reliable production and good cold tolerance, characteristics often associated with the Mt. Etna family of figs. While it is frequently grouped with Mt. Etna-type varieties because of its growth habit and fruit characteristics, its exact relationship to that family has not been definitively established.

The small to medium fruit ripens to a deep purple-black skin surrounding a rich, dark strawberry-red interior. At peak ripeness, the flavor is intensely berry-forward, with notes of blackberry, raspberry preserves, and black cherry layered over a deep fig sweetness. A subtle balancing acidity keeps the fruit lively rather than syrupy, creating a complex, well-rounded finish that lingers on the palate. The flesh is dense, jammy, and richly textured, making Chios Dark an outstanding fresh-eating fig and a favorite among collectors seeking bold, berry-flavored cultivars.
