I-258 (Italian 258)

I-258, also known as Italian 258, is one of the most highly regarded dark berry figs in the collector world. The variety originated in Italy and was introduced to North America by collector Todd Kennedy from the collection of Dr. Grassi. Unfortunately, Dr. Grassi's records were lost, leaving the original cultivar name unknown. As a result, the fig continues to be identified by its collection number rather than a traditional name. Although many experienced growers believe I-258 may be the same cultivar as Genovese Nero AF, this relationship has never been conclusively verified. As a common fig, I-258 is self-fertile and produces fruit without requiring pollination.

The tree is prized for its productivity, producing medium to large, dark bluish-purple figs with a deep red, syrupy interior. When allowed to fully ripen, the fruit develops an exceptionally rich flavor dominated by intense raspberry and mixed berry notes with remarkable sweetness, balanced by just enough acidity to create outstanding complexity. The flesh is dense, jammy, and richly flavored, making every bite reminiscent of premium berry preserves. Frequently ranked among the finest berry-flavored figs available, I-258 has earned a devoted following for its exceptional fruit quality, reliable production, and fascinating history as one of Italy's great unnamed treasures.
