Figo Preto

Figo Preto is one of the most celebrated dark berry figs in cultivation, prized for its exceptional flavor and consistently ranked among the finest dessert figs by collectors. Although its Portuguese name translates to "Black Fig," the variety was discovered growing on a longtime family tree in Point Loma, California, and is believed to have been cultivated there for decades before being introduced to the fig community. Its exact European origin remains unknown.

Medium to large fruit ripens with deep purple-black skin surrounding a dense burgundy-red interior. The flesh is remarkably thick and syrupy, delivering an intense blend of blackberry, raspberry, and dark cherry flavors balanced by rich sweetness and just enough acidity to keep every bite vibrant. As the fruit reaches peak ripeness, a drop of honey often forms at the eye, signaling its outstanding quality.

Figo Preto is widely regarded as a close relative of the famous Black Madeira and is frequently noted for being more vigorous and ripening earlier while producing similarly rich, complex fruit. Trees are moderate in vigor, produce a reliable main crop, and reward patient growers with one of the most memorable fig-eating experiences available.
