Ponte Tresa is one of Europe's most celebrated collector figs, named for the picturesque Swiss municipality of Ponte Tresa on the shores of Lake Lugano, where the original mother tree still grows today. The true cultivar name has been lost to history, so the variety became known simply by the place where it was discovered. After photographs of its brilliantly colored interior began circulating among fig enthusiasts, Ponte Tresa quickly gained legendary status and became one of the most sought-after cultivars in the collecting world. The tree is moderately vigorous with an upright growth habit and produces a reliable main crop of medium-sized, pyriform figs. The fruit develops a deep purple to nearly black skin with a small, tightly closed eye that offers excellent protection against insects and excess moisture.
