Saleeb

Saleeb is a unique dual-purpose fig developed through the University of California's fig breeding program. Best known as a persistent caprifig, it reliably produces pollen-bearing profichi (male breba crop) without requiring fig wasps, making it an invaluable resource for hand pollination, caprification, and breeding projects. Unlike traditional caprifigs, Saleeb also produces a dependable crop of edible common figs later in the season.

The edible mammoni crop ripens with smooth yellow skin and a pale amber interior. Its flavor is clean and delicately sweet, offering mild honey notes with a smooth, mellow finish. While the edible fruit is pleasant fresh from the tree, Saleeb is prized primarily for its remarkable utility rather than its dessert quality.

Originally developed as UCR 271-1 (DFIC 10), Saleeb was created by the University of California as part of a breeding program focused on developing improved fig genetics. Because it carries the persistent trait, it has become an important parent in breeding common, self-fertile figs while also serving as one of the most dependable sources of pollen for collectors and hybridizers.
