Smith

Smith is a legendary heirloom fig that has earned a devoted following for its exceptional flavor and outstanding performance in warm, humid climates. Believed to have originated in Croatia, the variety was brought to southeast Louisiana by early European immigrants, where it was preserved for generations by the Becnel family of Plaquemines Parish. Today, Smith is widely regarded as one of the finest heirloom figs to come out of the Gulf Coast region.

The small to medium fruit ripens with bronze-green to light brown skin surrounding a rich strawberry-red interior. When fully tree-ripened, Smith develops a dense, jammy texture and an intensely complex flavor combining strawberry preserves, ripe raspberry, wild berries, and golden honey. A pleasant acidity balances the sweetness, while drops of nectar often collect at the eye as the fruit reaches peak ripeness.

A common (persistent) fig, Smith reliably produces its main crop without pollination. Its tight, closed eye helps the fruit resist souring and spoilage in humid conditions, making it a favorite among growers throughout the southeastern United States.
