Takoma Violet

Takoma Violet is a distinguished American fig discovered in Takoma Park, Maryland, during a neighborhood search for heirloom fig trees by collector Gene Hosey and his friend Kathleen, for whom the variety Kathleen's Black was later named. The original tree belonged to an elderly German woman who had grown it for many years, and its exceptional productivity, winter hardiness, and fruit quality quickly set it apart. Named after the community where it was found, Takoma Violet has become one of the most highly regarded American selections and is widely considered one of the finest representatives of the Mt. Etna family of figs.

The small to medium-sized figs ripen to a deep violet-purple with a beautiful ruby-red interior that is dense, juicy, and richly flavored. Takoma Violet delivers classic Mt. Etna character, offering concentrated notes of ripe raspberry, strawberry preserves, and mixed red berries balanced by a pleasant brightness that keeps the fruit lively rather than overly sweet. The flesh develops a thick, jam-like texture as the fruit reaches full maturity, while the thin skin contributes little bitterness, allowing the berry flavors to take center stage.
