Believed to have originated near the historic city of Zadar on Croatia's Dalmatian coast, this variety was introduced to the United States through the renowned Belleclaire Nursery and has since become a favorite among collectors seeking something truly unique.
Its medium to large fruit is instantly recognizable by its flattened, squat shape and deep purple skin, often accented with an olive-green blush. Beneath the skin lies a vibrant crimson interior surrounded by a thick, creamy layer of flesh that gives the fruit an unusually satisfying texture. When allowed to fully ripen on the tree, Black Zadar develops an intensely sweet, complex flavor with notes of blackberry preserves, ripe cherry, caramelized sugar, and butterscotch, finished by a subtle bittersweet character reminiscent of dark grape skins.
