Campaniere
Campanière is an exceptional French heirloom discovered by renowned fig collector Thierry Demarquest of Figues du Monde on the grounds of an old farm known as La Campanière in the Lot region of southwestern France. The original mother tree, estimated to be well over a century old, had endured generations of harsh winters while continuing to produce abundant crops of outstanding fruit. Recognizing its remarkable combination of hardiness, productivity, and eating quality, Thierry propagated the tree and introduced it to collectors, where it quickly gained international recognition. In 2014, Campanière was honored with the prestigious Rustica Prize at the Saint-Jean de Beauregard Autumn Plant Festival, cementing its place among France's finest modern fig discoveries.
Campanière produces small to medium-sized figs with attractive yellow-green skin that may develop soft bronze or bluish hues in full sun. Beneath the delicate skin is a beautiful pink to ruby-red interior with a dense, jam-like texture. The flavor is refined and beautifully balanced, offering layers of ripe raspberry, wild strawberry, and red berry preserves complemented by gentle honey sweetness and classic fig richness. Rather than overwhelming intensity, Campanière is celebrated for its elegance—a bright, clean berry profile with lingering sweetness that becomes even more concentrated as the fruit hangs or naturally begins to dry on the tree.
The tree is vigorous, highly productive, and exceptionally well suited to cooler climates. Campanière ripens among the earliest premium berry-flavored figs, often beginning its harvest weeks ahead of many celebrated French varieties. Its fruit develops quickly once it begins to soften, reducing exposure to late-season rain, while its naturally early wood maturation contributes to outstanding winter hardiness. The figs also possess an unusual ability to remain on the tree as their sugars concentrate, making them excellent for natural drying. Combining heirloom French heritage, extraordinary cold tolerance, dependable productivity, and elegant berry flavor, Campanière has earned its reputation as one of the finest all-around figs available to today's growers.
